Need help upgrading from factory stereo system? $600-$700 to spend?

I don't know too much about car audio so I need help figuring out what is good and what isn't. I have a mitsubishi Galant 2000. I have the factory audio system and the sound gets distorted after turning it to a certain point. I went to best buy and this is what they recommended.

New Alpine rear and front speakers and Alpine deck $350
Alpine 12 in sub and Sony amp $300

This money doesn't include the installation fee for the amp and sub or the box for the sub or the wires or anything else like that.

Is it really THAT necessary to replace the stock speakers or can I get a pretty clear and decent sound with just the amp and sub?

Thanks

It's a combination of the crappy paper speakers and no frequency regulation that is causing the problem. Replacing the speakers is the single most effective way to make it sound better. Just doing that alone will make it sound 100x better, but even then the signal that stock stereo is putting out doesn't really separate the sound frequencies and the distortion is caused when the highs are trying to produce low frequencies and the lows are trying to produce high frequencies. Unless you really like a lot of bass, you really don't need a sub. The speakers, a new deck, and an amp should really make you happy. You'll be surprised how much bass comes out of a 6x9.
