what would be the best amp to run my rockford fosgate t112d2 sub? can i over power it?

i want this sub to pound but not blow. i have a volfenhag amp powering the sub bridged at 4ohms 640rms. but i think the gain may be too high so one day the amp cut off but the fuse didnt blow. it was really hot but it still works. so i was wondering what other amp could really push this sub to its potential that is reliable?

The RMS power handling of the sub should not be exceeded by more than 10%.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp to prevent clipping (damage by over powering).
